Lawton, OK – The Lawton Police Department joined the Lawton Public Schools Police Department in promoting drug prevention awareness during Red Ribbon Week 2026, visiting students at Hugh Bish Elementary School to encourage them to stay drug free.
Officers spoke with students about the importance of making healthy choices and avoiding drugs as part of this year’s national campaign, which carries the theme “Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free.”
The department shared photos and details of the visit on social media, thanking Hugh Bish Elementary and Lawton Public Schools for giving officers the opportunity to participate in the awareness campaign.
Red Ribbon Week is recognized nationwide as an effort to educate young people about the dangers of drug use and encourage communities to support drug-free lifestyles.
The annual campaign is also held in honor of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was killed in 1985 while working on an investigation into drug trafficking in Mexico.
His death inspired the creation of the campaign, which has since grown into the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness initiative.
Lawton police thanked school officials for involving officers in the campaign and encouraged residents to follow the department’s social media pages for additional updates and community information.
