Governor Stitt signs new savings initiative for children in state custody, calls it path to the American Dream

Oklahoma – Governor Kevin Stitt signed an executive order aimed at expanding access to federal Trump Accounts for children in Oklahoma’s foster care system, building on federal child welfare initiatives.

According to the governor’s office, the order is intended to strengthen financial protections and increase long-term opportunities for youth in state custody. Stitt said the initiative ensures that every child has a chance to pursue the American Dream, regardless of their circumstances.

In a statement, Stitt said he is partnering with the Trump administration and First Lady on efforts to provide financial opportunities for children nationwide. He added that Oklahoma will contribute an additional $250 for every eligible child in foster care to support the program.

The executive order directs the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to identify eligible children, secure available federal benefits, and ensure funds are used in the best interest of the child. It also advances the Oklahoma Dream Accounts Investment Program, which is designed to support long-term savings for education, career training, homeownership, and entrepreneurship.

Officials with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services said they will begin preparing for implementation by identifying eligible children and developing the framework needed to support the program.

OKDHS leadership praised the initiative, saying it aligns with their goal of helping young people leave foster care with the tools and opportunities needed to succeed.
