Oklahoma – A routine traffic stop in Oklahoma led to the discovery of an active pipe bomb, explosive materials and firearms, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
The trooper initially stopped a passenger vehicle for following another vehicle too closely. After speaking with the driver, the trooper developed probable cause to search the vehicle.
During the search, the trooper discovered an active pipe bomb, smokeless powder, a bag of potassium nitrate and detonator cord. A rifle with multiple magazines of ammunition was also found, and the driver was armed with a pistol.
The driver was arrested on multiple charges, including possessing an explosive device and possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the incident remains under investigation and that additional details were being intentionally limited at this time.
The agency described the encounter as an example of how a routine traffic stop can quickly develop into a criminal interdiction situation.
Troopers are trained to recognize potentially dangerous circumstances and safely handle encounters involving weapons and suspected explosive devices.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol credited the trooper’s attentiveness and professionalism with helping remove potentially dangerous items from the road.
“Outstanding work Trooper,” the agency said.
The department also used the incident to highlight the work of its troopers and announced that applications are currently being accepted for the 77th Oklahoma Highway Patrol Academy.
