Oklahoma facility renamed in honor of late Lawton Police Chief James Smith following legislative effort

Lawton, OK – The Red Rock Correctional Center in Oklahoma will be renamed the Chief James Smith Correctional Center in honor of former James Smith, who served as police chief in Lawton until his death in January.

The change was announced by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections and follows advocacy from state lawmakers, including Rep. Trey Caldwell, who pushed for the renaming effort. Officials said the recognition reflects Smith’s long career in public service and his impact on the community.

Originally introduced through House Bill 3969, the proposal was later incorporated into House Bill 2951, which relates to inmate transportation legislation. Lawmakers said the effort ensured the honor moved forward even without a Senate vote on the original bill.

Rep. Caldwell said Smith represented a lifetime of service and dedication to law enforcement and community safety, adding that the renaming serves as a memorial recognition of his contributions.

According to officials, signage at the facility has already been updated, although the Red Rock Correctional Center name will remain in use until a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for July 17.

The facility, previously known as the Lawton Correctional Facility, was renamed less than a year ago after being purchased from the GEO Group.
