Oklahoma – Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt announced that the Oklahoma Highway Patrol has completed cleanup efforts on state-owned property in Norman as part of Operation SAFE.
According to state officials, troopers worked along the 200 block of South Reed Avenue following a recent overdose death in an encampment located in the area. The initiative focused on clearing hazardous debris and removing materials from state-controlled property.
Operation SAFE, which was first launched in Tulsa, is a statewide effort aimed at addressing homeless encampments on state-owned land, including underpasses, highways, and other areas under state jurisdiction.
Officials said troopers cleared several acres of property and recovered thousands of needles and other potentially dangerous items during the cleanup.
Stitt said the program is intended to improve safety and cleanliness, adding that recent incidents and the encampment’s proximity to residential areas raised public safety concerns.
State officials also encouraged residents to connect individuals in need with services through the “Be A Neighbor” initiative, which links people to housing, food, and behavioral health resources through local organizations.
