Lawton, OK – City of Lawton leadership and staff recently toured the Comanche Renewables facility near the City of Lawton Landfill to learn more about how methane generated by household waste is being converted into renewable natural gas.
According to city officials, the facility captures methane produced as organic materials such as food waste, paper products, and yard debris naturally decompose in the landfill. Rather than allowing the gas to be released into the atmosphere, the facility collects and processes it into a usable energy resource.
The project was originally presented to the Lawton City Council in January 2022 and was developed through a partnership involving the City of Lawton, Comanche Renewables, NextEra Energy Resources, and Sparq Renewables.
During the tour, representatives explained how landfill gas is collected through a network of wells and transported to the processing facility. City leaders and staff also learned about the technology used to refine the gas and how the operation supports modern landfill management practices.
Officials said the visit provided city staff with a better understanding of the infrastructure and processes that work alongside landfill operations to recover and repurpose resources that would otherwise go unused.
The facility serves as an example of how waste generated through everyday municipal services can be transformed into a renewable energy source through innovation and public-private partnerships.
City officials said the project reflects ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and responsible resource management while keeping residents informed about initiatives taking place within the community.
