Gov. Stitt requests special audit of the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office, cites concerns over significant budget growth and increased staffing levels in recent years

Oklahoma – Governor Kevin Stitt has requested a special audit of the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office, citing concerns over significant budget growth and increased staffing levels in recent years.

In a letter sent to State Auditor and Inspector Cindy Byrd, Stitt pointed to what he described as a 205% increase in the Attorney General’s office budget between fiscal years 2023 and 2026, along with a substantial rise in employee headcount.

He said the audit was necessary to ensure transparency and accountability for Oklahoma taxpayers.

Stitt stated that residents “want limited government and lower taxes,” adding that a significant increase in agency spending requires public explanation. He also requested that an independent outside auditor be used due to potential conflicts of interest.

The governor additionally raised concerns about more than $20,000 in state funds directed to the Diversity Center of Oklahoma, referencing its programming and noting that the approval occurred after an executive order restricting certain types of funding.

The requested audit has not yet been initiated, and no findings have been released.
