Oklahoma – The Oklahoma Highway Patrol honored Captain Jim Terry following his retirement after 38 years of dedicated service to the state of Oklahoma.
According to OHP, Captain Terry began his law enforcement career in September 1988 as a Patrolman with Troop R (Capitol Patrol). Throughout his career, he served in multiple roles, taking on increasing responsibilities and leadership positions within the agency.
Terry was promoted to first-line supervisor at Troop R in 1998 and later became a Lieutenant in 2004. During his time with Capitol Patrol, he worked a variety of assignments, including Building Posts, Patrol, Bike Patrol, and Investigations.
OHP said Terry played a key role in operational planning for numerous major events and demonstrations at the State Capitol. His work included preparations for events such as the dedication of the State Capitol Dome, the opening and dedication of the Oklahoma History Center, and the Ceremonial Legislative Session in Guthrie celebrating Oklahoma’s Centennial birthday.
Beyond his field assignments, Terry also contributed as a law enforcement instructor. He taught Prevention of Workplace Violence courses for state employees and supervisors through the Office of Personnel Management’s Human Resource Development Services training program, as well as CLEET classes for law enforcement professionals.
Following the September 11 attacks, Terry helped develop security protocols for screening posts at the State Capitol and Judicial Center. He also helped establish the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s initial Continuity of Operations Plan, designed to ensure the department could continue critical functions during emergencies.
In 2014, Terry transitioned into a new role as an Investigator with the Office of Professional Standards after completing the transition into the Oklahoma Highway Patrol along with other members of Troop R.
Terry continued advancing through the ranks and was promoted to Captain in June 2022, when he was assigned as Commander of Troop A. In February 2024, he transferred to become Commander of Troop Z (Investigations).
His final assignment began in November 2025, when he was named Commander of Troop F.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol congratulated Captain Terry on his retirement and thanked him for his decades of service, leadership, and commitment to protecting communities across Oklahoma.
