Lawton, OK – The City of Lawton officially honored the life and legacy of former Police Chief James Smith by renaming the city’s correctional center in his memory.
During a ceremony held July 17, community members, city officials, and law enforcement personnel gathered as the facility was officially renamed the Chief James Smith Correctional Center.
City officials said the renaming recognizes Smith’s years of dedicated public service and his lasting impact on the Lawton community.
Smith served as chief of the Lawton Police Department from 2012 until his passing in January. Throughout his tenure, he was recognized for his leadership and commitment to public safety.
According to the City of Lawton, the dedication ensures Chief Smith’s name and legacy will continue to be remembered by future generations.
The city said the ceremony brought together members of the community to celebrate Smith’s life, honor his service, and recognize the contributions he made to the Lawton Police Department and the residents he served.
