Oklahoma – Cadets with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s 75th Academy recently completed one of the program’s most demanding training exercises as they prepare to graduate next month.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the cadets finished their defensive tactics unit by participating in a scenario designed to test their ability to perform under physical stress and challenging conditions.
As part of the exercise, each cadet was exposed to pepper spray before immediately demonstrating the ability to safely take a subject into custody. The training required cadets to secure the individual in handcuffs, communicate with headquarters, and continue carrying out their responsibilities despite the temporary effects of the spray.
The agency said the exercise is intentionally difficult but is designed to prepare future troopers for real-world situations where they may need to remain calm, focused, and in control during high-stress encounters.
Because Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers often work alone, officials said it is essential for cadets to learn how to respond effectively even after being temporarily incapacitated by pepper spray or a subject’s actions.
The defensive tactics training is one of several components of the academy that prepares recruits for the challenges they may face during traffic stops and other law enforcement situations throughout their careers.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said the training helps build the skills, confidence, and resilience needed to make sound decisions under pressure while maintaining officer safety and protecting the public.
The 75th Academy is scheduled to graduate on Aug. 21, when the cadets are expected to officially join the ranks of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol after completing the agency’s training program.
