Lawton, OK – The City of Lawton is offering additional disposal options for residents cleaning up storm damage following Thursday night’s severe weather, including temporary drop-off locations for tree debris and special accommodations for Area 4 residents.
In an update provided Saturday, City Manager John Ratliff announced that residents in Area 4 who were affected by the storm may place tree limbs and other storm-related tree debris at the curb ahead of their scheduled bulk collection week if they are unable to transport the debris to designated drop-off sites.
Bulk collection for Area 4 is scheduled to begin June 22. While crews will continue to collect debris according to the normal schedule, city officials said residents will not receive citations for placing storm-related tree debris at the curb before their designated collection week.
Officials emphasized that the temporary exception applies only to tree debris resulting from the storm and does not extend to other types of bulk waste.
To assist with cleanup efforts, the city will also provide roll-off dumpsters for the disposal of downed tree limbs and branches beginning June 15. The dumpsters will be available starting at 8 a.m. each day at two locations: McMahon Park near the intersection of Southwest 38th Street and Lee Boulevard, and the east parking lot of MacArthur High School at 4400 East Gore Boulevard.
City staff will monitor both locations throughout the collection period to ensure that only storm-related tree debris is deposited. Household trash, furniture, appliances, construction materials, and other non-storm-related waste will not be accepted.
Officials said the dumpsters will be removed each day at 5 p.m. and returned the following morning.
Residents transporting limbs and other debris are reminded to properly secure and tarp all loads before traveling on public roadways. City officials noted that covering loads helps prevent debris from falling onto streets and creating hazards for other motorists.
The temporary disposal program is available only to City of Lawton residential customers. Commercial businesses are not eligible to use the roll-off dumpsters.
The city also reminded residents that normal bulk waste regulations remain in effect. According to the established collection schedule, Area 3 is currently the only area authorized to place regular bulk waste at the curb.
Residents who are unable to use the temporary drop-off locations may also transport storm-related debris directly to the City of Lawton Landfill.
City officials thanked residents for their patience and cooperation as cleanup efforts continue across the community following the storm.
