Lawton, OK – Lawton police responded to an armed standoff following a welfare check at a residence in the 5200 block of NW Ashby, where officers say multiple shots were fired from inside the home toward officers.
The incident happened Sept. 19, 2026, when officers responded to the residence for a welfare check.
When officers arrived, they attempted to contact the occupants inside. During the initial contact, an individual fired a shotgun round from the front of the residence, according to the Lawton Police Department.
Officers immediately established a perimeter around the home as the situation escalated.
Crisis negotiators were called to the scene and attempted to communicate with the individual, encouraging them to leave the residence safely. The department also deployed its SWAT team.
During the standoff, police said multiple additional shots were fired from inside the residence toward officers positioned around the perimeter.
The SWAT team eventually deployed chemical gas into the residence in an effort to bring the standoff to a safe conclusion.
An adult female eventually exited the residence through the back door and was taken into custody without further incident.
Police said the suspect was medically cleared before being arrested on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.
Detectives later obtained a search warrant for the residence and found a 12-gauge shotgun along with ammunition during the search.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not released additional details about what led to the welfare check or the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
