Lawton Police Department launches Blue Envelope Project to support drivers with communication challenges

Lawton, OK – The Lawton Police Department announced the launch of the Blue Envelope Project, a voluntary program designed to help drivers who are autistic or who may have difficulty communicating during traffic stops.

Officials said the program allows participants to keep important documents such as a driver’s license, registration, and insurance inside a blue envelope that can be presented during a traffic stop. The envelope also signals to officers that the driver may need additional time, clear instructions, or modified communication.

According to the department, the goal of the program is to improve safety and reduce stress during interactions between drivers and law enforcement by encouraging officers to slow down, communicate clearly, and adjust their approach when needed.

The envelopes will be available beginning May 1, 2026, at the Lawton Police Department front desk.

Officials said the initiative is voluntary and intended to create safer and more positive interactions between drivers and emergency responders.
