Historic Johnson family home in Lawton added to National Register of Historic Places

Lawton, OK – The City of Lawton recently celebrated a momentous occasion as the James Carl Sr. and Lucille Johnson Family House was officially placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home, built in 1938, is located at 202 E. Gore Blvd. in what was Lawton’s first all-Black neighborhood.

The recognition honors not only the architectural significance of the property, but also the deep-rooted legacy of the Johnson family, whose contributions have been woven into the fabric of the community for generations.

City officials, residents, and members of the Johnson family gathered to commemorate the designation, reflecting on the history and meaning held within the home’s walls. Those in attendance noted the powerful sense of warmth and pride that filled the house — a reminder that this was far more than a historic structure; it was, and remains, a cherished family home.

“It didn’t just look like a house. It felt like a home,” the City of Lawton shared in a statement. “One that enveloped you in warmth, pride, and love.”

The city congratulated the Johnson family on the honor and expressed gratitude for their enduring impact on Lawton’s history and culture.
