Oklahoma – Two Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers helped save a driver’s life after responding to a minor crash near Jay and discovering the driver was experiencing a medical emergency.
On Aug. 3, Troop L Troopers Kainen Nance and Haven Clemons were dispatched to a crash involving a vehicle that had left the roadway and struck a fence and a tree near Jay, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
What initially appeared to be a minor crash quickly became a medical emergency.
During their investigation, the troopers determined that the driver had experienced a medical emergency. While the troopers were at the scene, the driver became unresponsive.
Nance and Clemons immediately began performing CPR while an ambulance was requested.
The troopers continued lifesaving CPR for approximately seven minutes before the driver was transported to a hospital for further treatment.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol later shared a positive update on the driver’s condition, reporting that the driver was released from the hospital two days after the incident and was doing much better.
The agency credited the troopers’ quick response and actions at the scene with helping the driver receive immediate lifesaving care.
OHP praised Nance and Clemons for their actions and dedication to helping someone in need.
“We’re proud of Troopers Nance and Clemons for their quick actions and dedication to helping someone in need,” the agency said.
The department also wished the driver continued improvement and a full recovery.
The incident serves as another example of the range of emergencies law enforcement officers can encounter while responding to what initially appears to be a routine traffic crash. In this case, the troopers’ assessment of the driver’s condition allowed them to recognize that the situation required immediate medical intervention.
Rather than simply handling the crash investigation, Nance and Clemons found themselves providing emergency medical assistance until additional help arrived.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol did not release additional details about the driver’s medical emergency or identify the individual.
The agency’s account also did not indicate that the driver suffered additional injuries from the crash itself beyond the medical emergency that prompted the troopers to begin CPR.
OHP’s update was shared Aug. 10, one week after the incident, with the agency emphasizing the successful outcome and the troopers’ role in providing immediate assistance.
The driver’s release from the hospital two days later provided a positive conclusion to an incident that began with a vehicle leaving the roadway and striking a fence and tree.
For Nance and Clemons, the response ultimately went far beyond investigating a minor collision. Their immediate decision to begin CPR helped provide critical care during the minutes before the driver could be transported to the hospital.
