Oklahoma trooper praised for lifesaving actions after finding teenager with critical self-inflicted gunshot wound and applying tourniquet before paramedics arrived

Oklahoma – An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper helped save a teenager’s life after stopping to assist with a critical gunshot wound in Creek County while heading home from a construction shift.

Trooper Dustin Tiner was driving home on October 12 when he heard a county radio call reporting a male with a gunshot wound in Creek County, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Realizing he was closer to the scene than the responding deputies, Tiner changed direction and rushed to help.

When he arrived, he found a teenager suffering from a critical, accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the left leg.

Tiner immediately began providing emergency medical assistance. He packed the wounds and applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding, maintaining the treatment until paramedics arrived.

After emergency crews took the teenager to the hospital, Tiner followed the ambulance so he could locate the teen’s parents and ensure they were informed about what had happened.

The attending physician later praised the trooper’s actions, describing his wound packing and tourniquet application as outstanding. According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the physician said the teenager would make a full recovery.

The agency highlighted that Tiner had already finished a long day of work and could have continued home, but instead responded when he heard someone needed urgent assistance.

His quick response and emergency medical training helped provide critical care before paramedics arrived, while his decision to follow the ambulance also ensured the teenager’s parents could be notified.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol praised Tiner for his dedication, service and commitment to protecting others, recognizing his actions as an example of how quick thinking can make a difference when every second counts.
