Oklahoma state superintendent Walters urges precautions ahead of extreme cold weather

Oklahoma – State Superintendent Ryan Walters released a statement urging Oklahoma families to take precautions as extreme winter weather approaches, potentially leading to school closures and transitions to remote learning.

“Our prayers are with all Oklahoma families as extreme winter weather approaches. We want to remind everyone to take extra care in staying warm and safe,” Walters said.

He noted that some schools will shift to remote learning starting Tuesday and encouraged parents to follow guidance from their local districts.

For schools remaining open, Walters advised parents to take extra precautions, including driving carefully, ensuring children are dressed in warm layers, and avoiding extended exposure to the cold at bus stops.

He also emphasized the importance of keeping children’s heads, ears, and hands covered to protect against freezing temperatures.
