Lawton, OK – On January 13, 2025, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed an executive order establishing the Secure Oklahoma NOW (Not on Our Watch) initiative, a comprehensive plan designed to strengthen the state’s defense against terrorism and enhance public safety.
The executive order empowers the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety (DPS) to work alongside a newly formed advisory council to create and implement security protocols for large public events across the state. These protocols will serve as guidelines for event organizers, ensuring that Oklahoma communities are better prepared to respond to potential threats.
In a statement following the signing of the order, Governor Stitt acknowledged the devastating impact of terrorism on communities, citing Oklahoma’s own history with such tragedies. He referenced the recent New Year’s Day attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans as a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorists.
“Sadly, Oklahomans are familiar with the devastating impact terrorists can have on our communities,” Governor Stitt said. “In the wake of the attack on Bourbon Street, it’s our responsibility to stay vigilant and prepared. The Secure Oklahoma NOW initiative is a proactive step to ensure our state remains a safe place for all residents and visitors.”
The NOW initiative reflects a growing national concern over security at large public events, with authorities across the country reviewing and enhancing safety measures in response to rising threats. By creating a statewide framework for event security, Governor Stitt aims to provide a unified approach to combating terrorism while safeguarding Oklahoma’s vibrant public gatherings.
The advisory council, composed of experts in law enforcement, security, and emergency management, will work closely with DPS to develop tailored strategies that address the unique needs of different communities and event types. This collaborative effort is expected to improve coordination between local, state, and federal agencies, as well as increase awareness and preparedness among event organizers and the general public.
As the initiative takes shape, officials stress the importance of remaining vigilant and maintaining a heightened state of awareness in the face of evolving threats. The Secure Oklahoma NOW initiative marks a key step in the state’s ongoing efforts to protect its residents from terrorism and other security risks.
