Oklahoma – Oklahoma cowboys came to the rescue after a cattle hauler overturned on Interstate 35 near mile marker 208 in Kay County, leaving several calves dead and others loose along the highway.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said troopers responded to the crash in the morning, finding an overturned trailer carrying calves. Some of the animals did not survive, while others escaped and scattered along the highway and surrounding area.
Troopers called on local cowboys for assistance, and several quickly arrived to help rope and secure the escaped calves, bringing the situation under control.
The cowboys who assisted were identified as Tyler Jeffries, Charlie Brandon, TJ Langston, Jeremiah Chafin and Chris Fagan.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol thanked the volunteers for responding without hesitation and putting their ranching skills to work during the emergency.
Tonkawa EMS and Fire, the Kay County Sheriff’s Office, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and Strickland Wrecker Service also assisted at the scene.
“You won’t find a better group of people anywhere in the world than the cowboys and cowgirls of Oklahoma,” the patrol said, praising the community members who stepped forward to help.
The agency added that while its patrol vehicles may have 370 horsepower under the hood, the incident was a reminder that sometimes the four-legged kind of horsepower is exactly what is needed.
