Lawton, OK – As snowy conditions affect parts of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) is reminding drivers to take extra precautions while traveling. The department announced that crews are actively working to treat roadways across the state, with particular attention on the southwest and southcentral regions, as well as the Oklahoma City metro area.
ODOT crews are plowing and treating key highways and turnpikes, including the H.E. Bailey, Chickasaw, Indian Nation, John Kilpatrick, Kickapoo, and Turner turnpikes. In addition, they are working to clear slick spots on local highways and interstates. With the potential for icy patches on roads, bridges, and overpasses, ODOT is advising motorists to use caution.
The department is offering the following recommendations for safe driving in these winter weather conditions:
- Maintain a Safe Distance: Drivers are urged to stay at least 200 feet behind road-clearing equipment and avoid passing them. Crews need plenty of space to maneuver, and they may begin plowing or applying materials without notice.
- Increase Following Distance: It’s important to leave extra space between vehicles to allow for adequate braking on slippery roads.
- Be Aware of Black Ice: A thin layer of ice, known as black ice, can form on roads, often appearing as a wet surface. This ice is hard to see but can be extremely slick.
- Plan Ahead: ODOT encourages drivers to plan trips ahead of time and allocate extra time for travel to reach their destinations safely.
With these tips in mind, ODOT urges drivers to be patient and exercise caution as they navigate winter roadways. In some cases, avoiding travel may be the safest option.
