Lawton ramps up mosquito control efforts with early morning spraying and public guidance

Lawton, OK – With mosquito season officially underway following recent rains, the City of Lawton is stepping up its mosquito control program to combat the surge in insect activity across neighborhoods and parks.

Beginning Monday, May 12, the city’s Vector Control team will initiate early morning mosquito spraying between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., a schedule that will continue Monday through Friday through September—weather permitting. Spraying will be delayed or canceled in the event of high winds or inclement conditions.

The City of Lawton’s Drainage Maintenance Division, which oversees mosquito control, will use Perm-X UL 4-4, a low-toxicity adulticide applied through Ultra Low Volume (ULV) foggers.

This chemical has been approved for use by both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, ensuring it meets health and safety standards while effectively targeting adult mosquitoes.

“Recent rains have created perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes,” the city said in a statement, emphasizing that regular spraying in high-risk areas will help reduce mosquito populations and protect public health.

In addition to city-led efforts, residents are urged to follow the Four D’s to further minimize mosquito exposure:

  • Drain standing water where mosquitoes lay eggs.

  • Dress in long sleeves and pants to limit skin exposure.

  • DEET: Apply insect repellent containing DEET.

  • Dusk and dawn: Avoid outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours.

For more information or to report mosquito concerns, residents can contact the City of Lawton’s Drainage Maintenance Division at (580) 581-3424.
