Gunfire Erupts in Southwest Oklahoma City Early New Year’s Morning

Oklahoma City, OK — A surprising turn of events unfolded just over an hour after the New Year rang in, as gunfire broke out in Southwest Oklahoma City, prompting a police response to a domestic disturbance call.

Around 1:30 a.m. on January 1, officers with the Oklahoma City Police Department were dispatched to Southwest 29th Street and Kentucky Avenue in response to reports of a domestic incident. Initial information suggested that a male subject was possibly firing a weapon outside the residence.

As officers arrived at the scene, they were informed that the suspect had fled the area. Officers quickly pursued him on foot and caught up with him in a nearby backyard, a couple of houses down from where the incident began.

During the ensuing confrontation, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the suspect. Police later confirmed that the suspect’s injuries were not life-threatening. No one else was injured in the exchange, and the identity of the suspect has not been released to the public.

Neighbors in the area, like Gerardo Macias, were taken by surprise. “We didn’t know how to react,” Macias said. “It was like a surprise for me, because I think the surrounding area is a quiet space.”

The Oklahoma City Police Department has not released further details regarding the officer’s actions or the circumstances leading up to the use of force. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
