Governor Stitt outlines statewide plan to address wildfire risks after 203,000 acres burned

Oklahoma – Governor Kevin Stitt announced that last week’s swift and coordinated wildfire response helped protect lives and property, even as fires burned more than 203,000 acres across the state. Building on that effort, the Governor is coordinating a statewide plan to prepare for additional wildfire risks expected in the coming weeks.

State agencies including the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management, Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Oklahoma National Guard, and the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety are enhancing interagency fire suppression support. The strategy prioritizes in-state resources for faster deployment, including National Guard air and ground teams, ODAFF fire suppression crews, and local wildfire task forces.

Fire weather conditions are expected to worsen, with drought, dry vegetation, and unseasonably warm temperatures contributing to higher risks. The State Emergency Operations Center remains activated with 24-hour staffing to manage resource requests from local jurisdictions.

Since last Tuesday, fires have included the Ranger Road Fire in Beaver and Harper counties, with at least four firefighters injured during responses. Governor Stitt emphasized proactive measures to protect lives and property, calling the current response “the most coordinated since I have been Governor.”

Residents are urged to follow local burn bans, stay alert to fire conditions, and report wildfires immediately by calling 911. The 2025 Wildfire Task Force Report is now available for review, detailing strategies to further strengthen wildfire preparedness across Oklahoma.
