Lawton, OK – According to the city officials, R.L. Smith will join the Lawton City Council as the Ward 2 representative following his election on November 5, 2024, succeeding Councilman Kelly Harris.
Smith, a longtime Lawton resident, began his career in the U.S. Army in 1977, where he met his wife, Billie, at Fort Sill. He retired from the Lawton Police Department in 2005 after 20 years of service, achieving the rank of sergeant. Known for his dedication to building positive relationships between law enforcement and the community, Smith spearheaded initiatives like Lawton’s Cops and Kids Picnic and various crime prevention programs.
Now a realtor, Smith remains active in the community through organizations such as the Fraternal Order of Police, International Union of Police Officers Local 24, and the Rotary Club of Greater Lawton. His 47 years in Lawton have fueled his commitment to the city’s growth and well-being.
The swearing-in ceremony is set for January 13, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in the Wayne Gilley Auditorium. Councilmember-Elect Smith, Councilmember Hankins, and Mayor Booker will take their Oaths of Office, followed by a reception in the auditorium foyer.
