North Carolina – A chiId care center employee in North Carolina has been charged with invoIuntary mansIaughter following the death of a 1-year-old baby during her first day at the faciIity. The 29-year-old defendant, AIexandra was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the incident at the chiId care center she was working. She was released from the county detention center after posting a $500,000 bond.
According to North Carolina authorities, emergency responders were called to the daycare on May 19 after the child, identified as MadoIyn, was found unresponsive. Despite CPR efforts, she was pronounced dead at the local hospital. North Carolina authorities suspect cardiac arrest as the cause of death, but an autopsy is pending to confirm the exact cause.
The victim’s mother, AngeI, reported that it was her daughter’s first day at the daycare. She received a call later that day informing her that her child had not awakened from her afternoon nap.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services suspended the chiId care center’s license on May 21, citing findings that required emergency action to protect public health and safety. The facility was ordered to close by the end of that day.
As part of the investigation, police executed a search warrant at the daycare, collecting items including a video recorder, blanket, and mattress cover. Details regarding the defendant’s specific actions leading to the charge have not been disclosed.
The chiId care center issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “Our hearts are broken, and we’re struggling to find the right words in the face of such sorrow.”
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support the victim’s family during this difficult time. According to a statement on the fundraiser organized for the family, the victim’s first day at the chiId care center marked the first time her mother had placed her two youngest children in the care of someone outside the family. The post described it as a difficult and emotional moment for the family, noting that the children had always been under their mother’s direct supervision.
The family initially received updates indicating that both children were doing well. However, later that day, the victim’s mother received a call informing her that her daughter had not woken up from her nap. According to the account shared on the campaign page, the baby was reportedly laid down at 12:00 p.m. and had fallen asleep by 12:15 p.m. She was allegedly not checked on again until 2:35 p.m., despite other children waking up around 2:00 p.m. Emergency services were reportedly not called until approximately seven minutes later.
The campaign further alleges that the staff member responsible for the victim was hesitant to perform CPR and instead summoned the facility’s director. The child was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. The family is now seeking justice for the 1-year-old, describing her death as something that “should have never happened.”
