The Gold Star Monument will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Elmer Thomas Park on January 9, 2024, city officials say

Lawton, OK – According to the city officials, this event will reportedly start at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 9, 2024.

The monument, a project undertaken to honor the sacrifices made by Gold Star Families for the freedom of the United States, will be situated on the memorial walk of the lake, providing a poignant backdrop with a view of the water fountain through the silhouette of the service member.

Initiated by WWII Medal of Honor recipient Woody Williams, the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument program aims to recognize and honor families who have lost a loved one in the Armed Forces.

The program, active in all 50 states and a U.S. territory, has installed 131 monuments, with an additional 64 in progress, fostering public awareness, community support, and remembrance.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony signifies a momentous occasion for the community to come together and express love, respect, and appreciation for Gold Star Families.

The committee is inviting civilian and military leadership to attend and support the event.
