Lawton, OK – A fire that broke out overnight consumed an abandoned house in northwest Lawton, leaving significant damage behind but no reported injuries. Authorities believe the structure, located on the 2200 block of Northwest Ferris Avenue, had been vacant for some time prior to the incident.
The Lawton Fire Department received the call just after midnight, reporting heavy smoke and flames visible from the property. Upon arrival, fire crews quickly contained the blaze, but the fire had already spread throughout the structure, making it impossible to save the home.
Firefighters worked through the early hours of the morning to ensure the fire did not spread to nearby properties. Lawton Fire Department spokesperson Captain Sarah Morgan confirmed that no one was inside the house at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire. “At this time, we are keeping all possibilities open,” said Captain Morgan. “We’re examining the site and will continue our investigation throughout the day.”
The house, which had been boarded up and showed signs of disrepair, had no electricity or gas lines connected. There is no immediate indication of foul play, but authorities have not ruled out arson or other potential causes.
Firefighters remained on the scene into the morning to ensure that all hot spots were fully extinguished. The incident has raised concerns about the potential fire hazards posed by abandoned homes, as these structures often lack regular maintenance and can attract vandals or others seeking shelter.
The fire department is urging residents to report any suspicious activity or abandoned properties that may pose safety risks. Fire officials are also reminding homeowners to maintain their properties and keep them secure to prevent such incidents in the future.
As of now, the investigation continues, and authorities are expected to release more details once they have more information.
