Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers compete in grappling championship, promote training and recruitment

Lawton, OK – The Oklahoma Highway Patrol announced that several troopers competed in the 2026 American Grappling Federation Oklahoma State Championship, highlighting the role of advanced training in law enforcement.

Officials said Brazilian jiu-jitsu, often referred to as “The Gentle Art,” is taught in academy training and encouraged throughout a trooper’s career.

The department noted that ground-fighting skills can help lead to safer outcomes for both troopers and combative suspects.

Troopers Elijah Presley and Kenny Johnson were recognized for their performances in the competition.

Trooper Shane Jackson and Lt. Mark Southall also attended the event, assisting with recruitment efforts for the agency.
