Oklahoma Highway Patrol hosts Youth Indian Police Academy cadets for driver training

Oklahoma – The Oklahoma Highway Patrol Training Division recently welcomed cadets from the Bureau of Indian Affairs Youth Indian Police Academy for a hands-on law enforcement driver training session.

The cadets, ranging in age from 14 to 17 and representing states including Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Kansas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma, had the opportunity to observe and participate in various driving techniques. The training showcased both basic and high-speed maneuvers at the Burns Flat facility.

Many cadets attending the academy were selected based on essays they submitted to earn a spot in the 10-day Youth Indian Police Academy held in Anadarko.

During the session, cadets also rode alongside new instructors who were enrolled in the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s Law Enforcement Driver Training (LEDT) Instructor course.

Officers and deputies from Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, South Dakota, and Mississippi participated as instructors and facilitators.

The OHP Training Division expressed gratitude to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for the opportunity to support the development and education of these young future law enforcement officers.
