Oklahoma – The Oklahoma Highway Patrol, working in partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, is continuing Operation Safe, an initiative focused on addressing homeless encampments located on state property.
Officials said many individuals have already relocated with the assistance of resources offered during the process, and no arrests have been made. Troopers noted that some people had been living on state property for more than a decade, making relocation especially challenging.
The Highway Patrol emphasized that the operation is being carried out with compassion, with nonprofit organizations helping connect individuals to support and resources.
The effort prioritizes safety for those living close to highway traffic, as well as for drivers.
Authorities reported safety concerns at the encampments, including environmental hazards near waterways, fires set close to structures and vegetation, and drug paraphernalia.
They stressed that drug use is unsafe and particularly dangerous near highways.
According to the Highway Patrol, the mission of Operation Safe is centered on safety for both the homeless population and the public.
