Oklahoma Highway Patrol cites safety violations after crash involving vehicle steered with vise grips

Oklahoma – The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is reminding the public about the dangers of operating unsafe vehicles after a recent crash involving a car that was being steered with vise grips instead of a standard steering wheel.

According to officials, the vehicle was involved in a collision on a public roadway. Upon investigation, troopers found that the original steering wheel had been removed and replaced with a pair of locking pliers, commonly known as vise grips. Authorities say the makeshift steering mechanism significantly compromised the driver’s ability to maintain control of the vehicle.

Under Oklahoma law, specifically 47 O.S. § 12‑201(1)(a), it is a misdemeanor offense to knowingly operate a vehicle that is in such unsafe condition as to endanger any person. Troopers have classified the use of vise grips as a clear violation of that statute.

No serious injuries were reported in the crash, but law enforcement officials emphasize that the outcome could have been far more severe.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol, with assistance from the Oklahoma City Fire Department, responded to the scene and documented the condition of the vehicle. Authorities are using the incident as a warning to the public about the legal and safety risks of operating modified or improperly maintained vehicles.

Officials urge all drivers to ensure that their vehicles meet required safety standards and to avoid makeshift repairs that could compromise essential systems such as steering or braking.

The incident remains under investigation, and appropriate citations have been issued.
