Lawton Police highlight DUI training for new recruits, stress dangers of impaired driving

Lawton, OK – The Lawton Police Department announced the completion of Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) by its recruit Class 2025-22, following an intensive Traffic Block training module. The training is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to prepare future officers to address impaired driving and promote road safety.

In a statement posted Friday, May 31, the department emphasized how critical it is for new officers to understand the serious consequences of driving under the influence. Recruits were taught to recognize signs of impairment and administer field sobriety tests—essential tools in preventing DUI-related crashes.

“These future professionals are learning just how serious impaired driving can be—and how it affects everyone on the road,” the department shared.

Lawton Police also reminded the public that driving under the influence endangers not just the impaired driver, but everyone around them. They encouraged individuals struggling with alcohol or substance abuse to seek help through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which offers resources and support.

“We all share the road—so let’s keep it safe,” the department added.

The training underscores the department’s commitment to proactive traffic enforcement and community safety education. Lawton Police continue to urge drivers to make responsible choices and avoid getting behind the wheel while impaired.
