Lawton, OK – Motorcycle riders continue to be overrepresented in fatal traffic crashes, with 6,218 motorcyclists killed in 2022 alone, making up 15% of all traffic fatalities. In an effort to promote safer riding practices, the Lawton Police Department (LPD) has partnered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to raise awareness and encourage safety among motorcycle riders in Southwest Oklahoma.
On March 22, 2025, members of the LPD Motor Unit will conduct a motorcycle safety course designed to help riders improve their skills and reduce the risk of accidents. The course will be offered free of charge to participants and is open to all motorcycle riders in the area.
“The Lawton Police Department encourages all motorcycle riders to take part in this valuable safety training,” said a spokesperson for the LPD. “Our goal is to ensure that riders have the skills they need to stay safe while sharing the road with other motorists.”
To participate in the course, riders must meet the following requirements:
– Helmet
– Full-length pants
– Over-the-ankle boots
– Gloves
– Street-legal motorcycle
The location for the course is still to be determined, but those interested in attending can register by emailing motorcyclesafety@lawtonok.gov.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce motorcycle-related fatalities and improve traffic safety throughout the region. The Lawton Police Department and NHTSA remain committed to promoting safer driving and helping to prevent accidents on the roads.
