Lawton Police Chief recognized for outstanding service by Oklahoma Chiefs of Police

Lawton, OK – The Oklahoma Association of Chiefs of Police has honored Lawton Police Chief James Smith as the 2025 Large Agency Chief of the Year.

The award was presented during the OACP’s annual banquet on May 22, recognizing Chief Smith’s outstanding service and leadership in a community with a population exceeding 10,000.

Chief Smith, who began his career with the Lawton Police Department in 2012, has been widely praised for his commitment to improving officer morale, well-being, and departmental support. His leadership initiatives have had a significant positive impact on both the officers under his command and the broader Lawton community.

“Chief Smith is a stellar example for Oklahoma law enforcement and the community he serves,” said OACP Executive Director Steve Whitlock. “We could not think of anyone more deserving of this award.”

Lawton City Manager John Ratliff also commended Chief Smith’s dedication. “Chief Smith’s commitment to transparency, innovation, and officer wellness has had a profound effect on our city,” Ratliff said.

“We are grateful to the OACP for acknowledging what we’ve known all along — that Chief Smith is an outstanding law enforcement leader and a true servant of the people.”

This recognition follows Chief Smith’s receipt of the William “Bill” Tilghman Award from the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Museum Hall of Fame in 2024, marking a continuing series of honors for his exemplary service.

The City of Lawton congratulates Chief Smith on this well-deserved accolade.
