Each month, Lawton firefighters collectively log over 2,000 hours of training across all stations. The department’s regimen includes quarterly CPR refreshers, advanced cardiac intervention methods, and specialized water rescue simulations. “We’ve had a renewed emphasis on CPR,” said Fire Chief Jared Williams. “The requirement is that we receive a refresher course every two years. We felt that wasn’t good enough, so we now do quarterly CPR training. We don’t want to just be good; we want to be the best.”
That rigorous approach paid off during a recent medical emergency involving cardiac arrest. Crews from Engine 7 and Rescue 5 were dispatched to assist an unconscious adult male who was not breathing. Upon arrival, firefighters immediately began advanced life-support interventions, including chest compressions, airway management, and administering cardiac medication via intraosseous (IO) access. The team implemented a pit-crew style CPR technique—an efficient, coordinated response method designed to maximize effectiveness until EMS arrived and transported the patient.
In addition to medical emergencies, the department’s high-level preparedness was tested during the widespread flooding that impacted Lawton and surrounding communities in April and May. Fire crews conducted more than 70 water rescues, safely navigating dangerous currents and unstable terrain to assist those stranded by rapidly rising waters.
