Lawton Fire Department leaders honored with True North Award for lifesaving response at courthouse

Lawton, OK – Two senior members of the Lawton Fire Department have received the distinguished True North Awardfor their heroic actions during a life-threatening emergency on May 20. Fire Marshal Heath Want and Fire Chief Jared Williams were recognized for their swift and decisive response that helped save the life of a Comanche County Deputy Sheriff who went into cardiac arrest.

The incident occurred at the Comanche County Courthouse, just steps from Central Fire Station, where both Marshal Want and Chief Williams were present at the time. Upon hearing the call for help, they immediately rushed to the scene, arriving as the closest available responders.

Working in coordination with courthouse deputies who had already begun CPR, the two fire officials administered critical life-saving measures, including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator. Their rapid response and skilled intervention, alongside the early efforts of courthouse staff and follow-up care by EMS crews, resulted in a remarkable outcome: the Deputy was responsive and talking before being transported to the hospital. Medical teams expect a full recovery.

The True North Award honors public safety professionals who exemplify courage, leadership, and a deep commitment to duty.

“This moment is a powerful reminder of the skill and dedication within our fire department,” city officials said. “Congratulations to Fire Marshal Heath Want and Fire Chief Jared Williams on this well-deserved honor. Thank you both for always being ready to answer the call.”
