Lawton, OK – At a recent City Council meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Randy Warren, on behalf of Mayor Stan Booker, presented a proclamation to the Lawton Public Schools Transition Program, declaring March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
“We have the transitional 18- to 22-year-old program, and we collaborate with many agencies, such as the City of Lawton, where our students come and work in various capacities,” said Transition Program Coordinator Rita Poshard.
The proclamation emphasizes the value of individuals with developmental disabilities, recognizing their vital contributions to the community and highlighting their right to respect, inclusion, and access to opportunities that allow them to reach their full potential.
Developmental disabilities affect millions of Americans, who face distinct challenges requiring tailored support, care, and understanding.
The efforts of advocates, families, caregivers, and service providers, like Darien’s Voice Foundation and the Lawton Public Schools Transition Program, play an essential role in improving the lives of those with developmental disabilities through empowerment, education, and support.
Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month serves as an opportunity to foster greater awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with developmental disabilities and the vital role their supporters play in their lives.
