OHP urges Oklahoma residents to prioritize safety after weekend tragedies on roads and waterways

Oklahoma – The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported a tragic weekend across the state, with 16 people losing their lives—15 in vehicle collisions and one from drowning. Among the victims were five children who died in vehicle crashes.

Troopers emphasized that many of these tragedies are preventable through safe driving, adherence to traffic laws, practicing water safety, and maintaining vehicles and equipment properly.

The department noted that traffic stops and citations are intended to prevent accidents and save lives, not punish drivers.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol urged residents to drive safely, obey the law, and take precautions to protect themselves, their families, and others on the road and waterways.

Officials also encouraged parents to speak with their children about safe driving, the importance of seat belts, and responsible decision-making behind the wheel.

“Every choice you make behind the wheel or on the water matters,” the department stated. “Please choose safety, because lives depend on it.”
