OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — As freezing temperatures continue to grip Oklahoma, residents are facing more than just a chill in the air. The cold weather is also wreaking havoc on vehicles, with car batteries and tires being particularly vulnerable.
According to Isidro Fuentes, manager at Batteries Plus, winter temperatures are causing a noticeable increase in the number of customers needing battery replacements or emergency assistance. “We see an influx in people needing their batteries changed or people just calling to get batteries because they’re stranded, because their battery went kaput,” Fuentes explained.
The frigid temperatures can significantly reduce the performance of car batteries. Shawn Steward, spokesperson for AAA Oklahoma, elaborated on the issue, stating, “When the temperature is at zero degrees, your battery starting power is reduced by 60 percent. This means the battery has to work much harder to turn the engine over and start the car. If the battery is weak or old, it may not start at all.”
For drivers who find themselves with a dead battery, waiting for assistance can leave them stranded in the cold for hours. Experts recommend investing in a personal jump starter to save time and avoid the hassle of waiting for roadside help. Additionally, Fuentes suggested using a battery maintainer to extend battery life during the winter months. “An automatic battery maintainer is a good option. It kicks on when needed and kicks off once the battery is fully charged,” Fuentes said.
Tire performance is also a concern during the winter. Cold temperatures can cause tire pressure to drop, leading to decreased traction and potential safety risks. Steward emphasized the importance of regularly checking tire pressure and refilling tires as needed to ensure they’re properly inflated. “It’s important throughout the winter to double-check the pressure in your tires and refill them to the appropriate amount,” Steward said.
Having a portable air compressor in the car can be a quick and convenient way for drivers to manage tire pressure while on the go.
As part of winter car maintenance, AAA Oklahoma recommends adding a cold weather emergency kit to your vehicle. The kit should include essential items like blankets, water, and non-perishable snacks, as well as tools to help in case of emergencies.
With cold weather expected to continue throughout the season, experts advise Oklahoma drivers to take proactive steps to prepare their vehicles and ensure they stay safe on the road.
