Resignation leaves Lawton’s Ward 2 council seat vacant as city prepares to address position

Lawton, OK – According to the city officials, R.L. Smith has officially resigned from his position as Ward 2 City Councilman in Lawton, Oklahoma, effective immediately.

In a letter addressed to Mayor Booker, fellow council members, and the citizens of Ward 2, Smith cited ongoing health concerns, the need to spend more time with family, and new business opportunities as key reasons behind his decision.

“This decision has not come easily,” Smith wrote. “But I believe this is the right step forward.” He expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve and described the role as one of the greatest honors of his life.

Smith also thanked his colleagues and the community for their support throughout his time on the council.

The Lawton City Council is expected to discuss the vacancy during its next meeting, scheduled for July 22 in the Wayne Gilley Auditorium. No timeline has been set for appointing or electing a replacement, but city officials are expected to outline next steps during that meeting.

Smith’s departure marks a significant change for the council, and his contributions during his tenure were recognized in the city’s official statement announcing the resignation.
