Oklahoma to take over Lawton Correctional Facility, ending state’s use of private prisons

Oklahoma – The Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) has entered into a formal agreement to purchase the Lawton Correctional Facility from The GEO Group, marking a pivotal step toward a fully unified state-run corrections system. ODOC is scheduled to assume operational control of the facility on July 25, pending approval by the Oklahoma Board of Corrections.

With the acquisition, Lawton Correctional Facility becomes the final privately operated prison to be brought under state control, signaling a major milestone in ODOC’s long-term strategic reform of the state’s correctional infrastructure.

“We look forward to bringing our high-quality operations, processes and compassionate environment to the Lawton facility,” said ODOC Director Steven Harpe. “This change ensures consistency in standards, transparency and accountability across all ODOC institutions.”

The transition is part of ODOC’s broader mission to modernize corrections across Oklahoma by prioritizing safety, rehabilitation, and innovation. The agency said it will collaborate with current facility staff and community partners to ensure a smooth and seamless transfer of operations.

Following the model used during ODOC’s recent assumption of operations at Allen Gamble Correctional Center in Holdenville, all current Lawton Correctional Facility employees will be offered continued employment, subject to standard background checks.

“This move not only strengthens our public safety infrastructure but also reflects our commitment to better outcomes for staff, inmates and the people of Oklahoma,” Harpe added.

Once the purchase is finalized, ODOC will assume full control over the facility’s operations, staffing, and inmate programming. Officials said the change represents not just a shift in management, but a deeper effort to expand ODOC’s culture of accountability and rehabilitation across the entire system.

The agency emphasized its ongoing commitment to transforming lives and building a safer, more effective correctional system for the state.
