Oklahoma Highway Patrol reminds drivers to prioritize safety after semi blocks off-ramp on Turner Turnpike

Oklahoma – The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) is using a recent roadside incident as a reminder for all motorists to exercise better judgment when dealing with vehicle issues on busy highways.

According to OHP, a semi-truck driver caused a traffic disruption on Wednesday after stopping on the eastbound off-ramp of the Turner Turnpike near Bristow to wait for roadside assistance due to a flat trailer tire. While the truck was still drivable, the driver opted to wait on the ramp, partially obstructing traffic during an active period.

Although vehicles were able to maneuver around the stopped semi, troopers noted that the situation posed a risk to both the driver and others on the road. “Blocking an off-ramp creates unnecessary hazards and can lead to collisions,” said a spokesperson for OHP.

Ironically, the situation closely mirrored a topic covered just a day earlier in OHP’s public safety series, “Tuesday with a Trooper,” which had addressed what drivers should do when their vehicle becomes disabled. Key guidance from the episode emphasized the importance of moving vehicles out of travel lanes whenever possible and safe to do so.

Upon arriving at the scene, a trooper directed the driver to move the semi approximately 50 yards ahead to a safer location on the shoulder of the roadway, where it would not interfere with traffic flow. The vehicle had 17 remaining operational tires and was capable of being moved without assistance.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is urging all drivers—especially those operating large commercial vehicles—to follow basic road safety practices, including pulling off the road when possible in case of mechanical issues. Officials emphasize that even non-collision incidents like this one can lead to serious consequences if not handled properly.

OHP continues to share weekly safety tips through its social media series and encourages the public to stay informed and alert while traveling on Oklahoma highways.
