Oklahoma – Emergency Communications Officer Summer VanBuskirk of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol was recently named Telecommunicator of the Quarter by the 9-1-1 Authority for her exceptional handling of a high-pressure call in October 2024.
During her overnight shift at the Central Regional Communications Center, VanBuskirk received a call from a family rushing to the hospital as the mother was in active labor.
When the baby unexpectedly arrived while the family had pulled over under the Scissortail Bridge, VanBuskirk remained calm and compassionate, helping to keep the family reassured during the unexpected roadside delivery.
After the birth, with the vehicle dangerously low on fuel, VanBuskirk continued to provide guidance and directed the family safely to the hospital. Thanks to her steady support, the family arrived just in time despite the challenging circumstances.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol praised VanBuskirk’s professionalism and dedication during this life-changing event.
