City of Lawton employee honored with True North Award for life-saving actions

Lawton, OK — The City of Lawton has awarded its latest True North Award to an employee whose quick thinking and decisive action during a routine workday helped save a life.

In May, while assisting with bulk waste pickup in Ward 7 following heavy rainfall, the employee noticed a vehicle stopped awkwardly at the intersection of SW Monroe and 19th Street. Trusting his instincts, he asked a colleague to pull over and check on the situation.

Inside the vehicle, they found an unconscious and unresponsive driver. Without hesitation, the employee contacted emergency services and remained on scene to ensure the individual’s safety. Emergency medical personnel arrived shortly after and were able to transport the driver to the hospital — a response that ultimately saved the person’s life.

The True North Award is given to City of Lawton employees who exemplify integrity, leadership, and outstanding service. City officials noted that the employee’s calm, compassionate response went far beyond the call of duty and serves as a powerful example of public service in action.

The city expressed its gratitude for the employee’s vigilance and commitment to the community, calling the actions “a shining example of what it means to serve with heart and purpose.”
